Liam’s heart literally hurt, but with Jalina snuggled into him so closely, he didn’t feel like he was going to get sucked back into the darkness, like he usually did when he remembered the black time in his life. And when she kissed his chest, it felt like she was kissing his heart, trying to take all the pain away.
Nothing could do that, but she came closer than anything in his life ever had.
“Does it help?” she asked softly.
“Being an Enforcer? Yeah. If nothing else, it gives me something to focus on. I would have lost my mind a long time ago if I didn’t have this.”
“Why didn’t Enforcers go after the other family?”
“There’s only one branch in Ireland, and they’re close to the Walsh family. They looked the other way.”
“Fuckers,” she muttered.
Eyebrows raising, he glanced down with surprise. He’d never heard her curse like that before. She glanced up and met his eyes, shrugging sheepishly, and despite how much his chest still hurt, he smiled back.
Brow furrowing, she searched his eyes. “Where’s your brother? Shane?”
He exhaled, anger and regret washing over him in equal measure. “I don’t know. When he got home that night, I tore into him pretty good. I told him it was his fault, that I’d warned him to stop seeing her. I even threw a few punches. I knew he was hurting, too, but I couldn’t stop. And the next morning, he packed a bag and left. I never spoke to him again. I was fine with that for the longest time. I blamed him for getting our mom and sister killed, but now I know I was just as responsible as he was. I’m still angry at him for what he did. I’ve tried to let it go, but I can’t. But I regret saying the things I did to him that night. I haven’t seen him again to tell him so, though.”
Frown deepening, she shook her head slowly. “First of all, I think your anger is understandable, although I think talking to someone about what happened probably would have helped you work through it. Second, how the hell are you responsible?”
“Because I knew he was seeing her and I didn’t tell our parents. They might have had better luck getting through to him. Instead, I kept his secret to myself, and it killed the rest of my family.”
“Or they wouldn’t have had any luck either and having all of y’all on his case could have made things worse. Maybe even pushed him into acting rashly and then maybe none of y’all would have survived. You can’t take that on yourself, Liam. You were trying to be a good brother, and you tried to get him to stop seeing her.” She went quiet for a moment, biting her lip. “Is that why you hate secrets so much?”
“Yeah. Secrets were what got my family killed. When I find out someone has been keeping them, I get irrationally angry, maybe because it reminds me of what I lost.
